Meet Dr. Melyssa
I knew from a young age that I wanted to work in healthcare. In my search for where I fit into the healthcare system, I could not quite find a career that aligned with my beliefs. I wanted more than just medications and bandages for symptoms and diseases. I wanted options for maintaining health throughout life, for determining what causes the symptoms, and options that did not involve being on a medication for a lifetime.
I was drawn to Naturopathic Medicine after seeing the significant impact it had on the quality of life of several close friends and family members. I was intrigued by the ways natural remedies, diet and lifestyle could help to relieve symptoms, as well as minimize the use and side effects of medications, even in chronic and terminal illnesses. I appreciated the focus on prevention and finding the root cause of illness, rather than addressing an issue only once it exists and focusing solely on symptom management. While medication is an important component of medicine, I wanted more tools in my toolbox.
I sought out the care of a Naturopathic Doctor for chronic migraines, as well as neck and back pain. I experienced more relief than I had before with conventional medicine or other physical therapies. My Naturopathic Doctor empowered me to ask questions and become involved in my own care. It was the first time I felt I had been truly heard in a healthcare setting. From the time I discovered Naturopathic Medicine, I knew it was my calling.
What I Do
I believe you should be able to do all of the things you enjoy in life, without your health getting in the way. Whether you are missing out on playing with your kids or having difficulty getting out of bed in the morning, I would love to work with you on how to enjoy every day to its fullest and without the symptoms that are hindering you.
As a Naturopathic Doctor, I work with people to optimize their health, so they can get back to the things they enjoy most. I aim to empower my patients to make changes for their health that they can maintain long term. While I maintain a general practice, I have a passion for working with patients with chronic pain and fatigue, as well as digestive concerns. I utilize a variety of tools to develop an individualized plan specific to you to help get you back on track.
Prior to moving to the Barrie area, I completed a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Human Nutritional Sciences at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. I then went on to the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto to complete my Doctor of Naturopathy Degree.
My passion for natural medicine was further cultivated at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, where I completed a 12 month focused internship in caring for patients with Fibromyalgia and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome).
It was in this internship that I learned just how much Naturopathic Medicine has to offer people with chronic pain and fatigue of various causes and how much I enjoy working with this enthusiastic and engaged population.
