Meet Dr. Melyssa

My Story

Dr. Melyssa, grass, wood fence

Hi, I’m Dr. Melyssa and I’m a Naturopathic Doctor practicing in Ontario, Canada. I am so incredibly fortunate to absolutely love what I do! I spend my time working with women and men who are not reaching their full potential and living the lives they deserve to live because of pain and low energy, specifically those suffering from fibromyalgia. I am often asked why I love working with those with fibromyalgia so much, despite not having the condition myself. This passion comes from my own journey and health challenges.

For a long time, I suffered from debilitating migraines, constant pain, and I was always tired. Despite never being diagnosed with fibromyalgia, I was having trouble functioning. I struggled to go to work, attend school, and have a social life. I felt like complete garbage. I saw doctor after doctor and was prescribed pain killers, anti-inflammatory medications, I had brain scans and blood tests, and in the end, I was told that they couldn’t find anything wrong with me. My options were pain relieving medications or suffer through it.

I felt discouraged. How could I feel this way and there be nothing wrong with me? I didn’t feel normal, so why were all my tests indicating that I was? I wasn’t willing to accept the fact that I would have to live this way for the rest of my life. I was in my early 20s and hoped I had many more years left to live, but I didn't want to feel like this. By chance, I stumbled across naturopathic medicine and made my first appointment with a naturopathic doctor. She was so much different from other doctors I’d seen. She spent time getting to know me and the tests she used were different from the ones I’d been through already. She determined that I had an imbalance in my gut bacteria and recommended that I change my diet, take herbs to kill the bad bacteria, and a probiotic supplement to replenish the good bacteria. We worked on stress management and practicing healthy lifestyle habits like sleeping regularly and exercising more. After several months of seeing her, my pain levels were much lower, I had more energy, and I’ve been migraine-free ever since! I can only imagine what my life would have been like had I not continued searching for answers.

In my training and in working with people suffering from Fibromyalgia, I see that same spark that I had when I was not thrilled with my medical options. You are ambitious, talented, brilliant, and you have important messages and gifts to share with the world. You are the change-seeker that the world is missing. You are destined for more than suffering and struggling to get out of bed every day, but your symptoms are stopping you from getting there. That’s not normal and it’s not ok. You don’t have to settle for this. You have options. Lots of them. I work with people with Fibromyalgia just like you to achieve health goals you may never have thought possible. It is so rewarding and I can't wait to see what you accomplish.

My Credentials

Prior to moving to the Barrie area, I completed a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Human Nutritional Sciences at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. I then went on to the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto to complete my 4 year Doctor of Naturopathy Degree.

My passion for natural medicine was further cultivated at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, where I completed a 12 month focused internship in caring for patients with Fibromyalgia and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). It was in this internship that I found my calling. I learned just how much Naturopathic Medicine has to offer people with chronic pain and fatigue of various causes and how much I enjoy working with this enthusiastic and inspiring population.
