Fatigue
A Root-Cause Approach to Persistent Exhaustion, Low Energy, & Burnout
Feeling tired all the time is not a personal failing and it is not something you should have to “push through.”

Persistent fatigue can affect every part of life, including work performance, relationships, motivation, mood, and confidence in your body. Many patients are told their blood work is “normal,” that stress is the cause, or that fatigue is simply part of getting older, yet they know something isn’t right.

Fatigue is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It reflects underlying imbalances in how your body produces energy, regulates stress, manages inflammation, and supports metabolic and immune function.
As a Naturopathic Doctor, I help patients identify why fatigue is happening and address the root causes that prevent you from hopping out of bed every morning ready to take on the day.
Why Fatigue Becomes Chronic
Energy production depends on multiple systems working together. Digestion, nutrient absorption, hormone signaling, blood sugar regulation, thyroid function, sleep quality, and proper immune function are all essential to feeling energetic and full of life.

When one or more of these systems is under strain, fatigue becomes persistent, even after rest.
Common contributors include:
-
Nutrient deficiencies
-
Poor sleep or insomnia
-
Chronic stress and nervous system dysregulation
-
Hypothyroidism
-
Insulin resistance
-
Autoimmune activity
-
Digestive dysfunction and gut microbiome imbalances

Fatigue rarely has a single cause. Effective treatment requires looking at you as a whole person.
Nutrient Deficiencies & Energy Production
Your cells rely on specific nutrients to produce energy efficiently. Deficiencies in iron, B vitamins, magnesium, zinc, vitamin D, and other key nutrients can impair mitochondrial function. Mitochondria are the parts of your cells that generate energy.

Digestive issues, gut inflammation, or low stomach acid can prevent proper absorption of nutrients, even when dietary choices are adequate. This is why fatigue often coexists with bloating, food sensitivities, or IBS.

Correcting nutrient deficiencies requires identifying why they developed, not just supplementing blindly and hoping for the best.
Sleep & Insomnia
Restorative sleep is essential for energy, inflammation control, hormone balance, immune regulation, and stress resilience.

Insomnia or non-restorative sleep can be caused by elevated cortisol and chronic stress, blood sugar instability, hormonal imbalances, inflammation, sleep apnea, nutrient deficiencies, anxiety or nervous system hypervigilance.

When sleep is disrupted or non-restorative, fatigue worsens, even if you spend enough time in bed. Improving sleep quality is a foundational part of restoring energy.
Stress, Burnout & the Nervous System
Stress is not just emotional, it’s physical.

Chronic stress keeps the body in a heightened fight-flight-freeze state, diverting resources away from digestion, repair, hormone production, and immune balance. Over time, this leads to exhaustion, poor sleep, brain fog, immunosuppression, and reduced resilience.

In many fatigued patients, the stress response becomes dysregulated. The stress response either gets stuck in overdrive or is unable to respond appropriately when a stressor occurs. Addressing stress physiology requires both removing physical stressors (inflammation, blood sugar regulation, nutrient depletion, digestive function, poor sleep) and supporting mental-emotional stress resilience.
Thyroid Function & Fatigue
Thyroid hormones regulate metabolism, energy production, body temperature, mood, and cognitive function.

Even mild or early stage Hypothyroidism can contribute to:
-
Persistent fatigue
-
Brain fog
-
Cold intolerance
-
Weight gain
-
Low mood
-
Constipation
-
Dry skin and hair

Thyroid function is closely linked to gut health, nutrient status, inflammation, and function of the immune system. Supporting thyroid health requires addressing these underlying influences, not just hormone levels alone.
Insulin Resistance & Energy Crashes
Insulin resistance interferes with the body’s ability to use glucose (also known as sugar) efficiently for energy. Insulin resistance and blood sugar dysregulation lead to symptoms such as afternoon energy crashes or feeling tired after eating, brain fog, pain, sugar or carb cravings, difficulty concentrating, and difficulty losing weight.

The gut microbiome plays a key role in blood sugar regulation and insulin sensitivity. Supporting metabolic health and a healthy gut microbiome essential for consistent energy levels.
Autoimmune Conditions & Fatigue
Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms of autoimmune disorders. Chronic immune activation increases inflammation and energy demand, leaving fewer resources available for daily function. Autoimmune fatigue often persists even when other symptoms are controlled.

Supporting energy in autoimmune conditions requires addressing inflammation, gut integrity, nutrient status, stress physiology, and immune regulation together.
My Root-Cause Approach to Fatigue
The causes and contributors to fatigue are highly individualized. Your care may include:
-
A comprehensive health and lifestyle assessment
-
Evaluation of digestion, sleep, stress, and energy patterns
-
Targeted lab testing to assess nutrients, thyroid function, blood sugar, inflammation, and immune markers
-
Gut microbiome and digestive support
-
Targeted support to improve mitochondrial function
-
Nutrient repletion based on individual needs
-
Strategies to support sleep and nervous system regulation
-
Sustainable lifestyle guidance that fits your life

The goal is not to push your body harder and ignore the fatigue, but to restore the systems that allow energy to return naturally.

You Don’t Have to Accept Constant Exhaustion As Your Permanent State.

Many patients notice improvements such as:
-
More consistent energy throughout the day
-
Improved sleep quality
-
Clearer thinking and focus
-
Better stress tolerance
-
Greater confidence in their body

Fatigue is a signal, not something to ignore. Tune into what your body is trying to tell you.
A Clear Way Forward
If exhaustion is limiting your life, there's more going on beneath the surface.
